This narrative explains the mythological origin of why devotees shatter coconuts as an offering to Lord Ganesha. According to the legend, the gods failed to honor Ganesha before seeking Lord Shiva’s help to defeat demons, prompting Ganesha to stall their divine chariot by removing its axle pin. To resolve the crisis, Ganesha demanded a three-eyed sacrifice, a description that initially terrified the gods as it seemed to refer only to Shiva himself. The conflict was resolved when the gods realized that a coconut also possesses three eyes, leading them to offer the fruit as a symbolic substitute. This act of devotion pleased Ganesha, establishing the tradition of breaking coconuts to awaken the deity from his meditation and secure his blessings.
